Description

Sesame seeds are small, flat seeds that come from the sesame plant, native to Africa and India. They feature a nutty, delicate flavor and are packed with essential nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats.

These oval-shaped seeds come in different colors – ivory, brown, black, and red, each with their unique flavor profile. Ivory (or white) sesame seeds are subtly sweet and commonly used atop bread, bagels, and buns. They are also a prime ingredient for making tahini, a creamy sesame paste popular in Middle Eastern cuisines.

The darker varieties, black and brown, have a pronounced earthy flavor and make a flavorful garnishing for salads and stir-fry dishes. Red sesame seeds, though less common, are known for their slightly bitter taste and are frequently used in Chinese and Korean recipes.

In cooking and baking, sesame seeds provide a wonderful crunch and an added complexity of taste, increasing the depth of flavor in dishes. They are often toasted to strengthen their flavor, making them perfect for savory dishes, sweet treats, and everything in between.

Aside from offering a unique flavor and texture, sesame seeds contribute beneficial heart-healthy fats and are a good source of fiber, calcium, iron, and magnesium, making them a welcome addition to a balanced diet.

However, they should be used in moderation due to their high calorific content, making them a rich but healthy addition to your recipes.

Grocery Store Location

Sesame seeds can typically be found in one of three sections of the grocery store:

1) Baking aisle: They may be stored with the baking ingredients alongside other types of seeds, nuts, and some types of dried fruit.

2) Spice aisle: Sesame seeds are often used as a spice or topping, so you might also find them in the spice aisle.

3) International aisle: If your grocery store has a section dedicated to international foods, sesame seeds might be found there, particularly in the section with Asian foods since they're commonly used in Asian cuisine.

If you can't find them, don't hesitate to ask a store employee for help.
