A classic growing up. This recipe came from a mail-in offer from a magazine that has lasted years in our family. The sauce itself is reminiscent of a béchamel sauce. Combined with the sharpness of the cheddar, this meal is great for a cold night or kid-friendly event.

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. Cook elbow macaroni as the box directs and drain.
  3. Melt butter in saucepan over medium-high heat.
  4. Once melted, remove from heat. Stir in flour, salt, and pepper until smooth.
  5. Gradually stir in milk. Bring to boil, stirring (as soon as it bubbles turn down heat).
  6. Simmer mixture for 1 minute. stirring constantly. Then, remove from heat.
  7. Stir in 1 ½ cups cheddar cheese and all elbow macaroni. Pour into baking dish and sprinkle the remaining cheese on top.
  8. Bake 15 - 20 minutes or until cheese is golden brown.
